What Are Rabies Titers and Why You Need Them for Traveling with a Dog

If you're planning to travel with your pet to Europe or the UK, your dog will likely need a rabies titer test — a blood test that measures antibodies against rabies. In many countries, pets are simply not allowed to enter without it.

What Is a Rabies Titer Test?

A rabies titer test is a blood test that checks whether your pet has enough antibodies against the rabies virus. Even if your dog has been vaccinated, that doesn't always guarantee a sufficient immune response — which is exactly why the titer test matters.

This test is mandatory for entering many countries, including all EU member states and the United Kingdom. Without it, your pet's documents will be considered incomplete.

How the Process Works

  1. Rabies vaccination comes first. It's important to use an approved vaccine recognized by EU laboratories.
  2. Blood can be taken for the titer test 30 days after vaccination — this is usually when antibody levels are at their highest.
  3. The test can also be done later, but antibody levels may decrease over time, potentially leading to an insufficient result. It's better not to delay too long.
  4. After the blood test, there is still a 90-day waiting period before crossing the border.

Please note: not all rabies vaccines are suitable for titer testing. It's best to confirm with your veterinarian in advance whether your vaccine meets the requirements.

Travel documents for dogs

What You Need for a Dog Rabies Titer Test

  • Microchip. Your pet must be microchipped, and the chip must be registered before the rabies vaccination.
  • Veterinary passport with your dog's name written in Latin characters.
  • Licensed veterinary clinic. The test must be done through a certified clinic and then sent to an approved European laboratory. In Tbilisi, examples include Vet Point, Vet House, and KIVI.
  • Cost. Around 500 GEL per test, not including the separate blood collection fee.

How Long Results Take

  • An electronic certificate is usually sent within 3–4 weeks.
  • The printed version is typically ready in about 1 month.

Make sure the results include the correct owner's name, microchip number, contact phone number, and email address.

Why It's Worth Doing the Test in Advance

Even if you're not planning a trip anytime soon, getting the test done early is often a smart decision:

  • The result remains valid as long as revaccinations are done on time.
  • There's less stress if travel plans suddenly change.
  • One test now means you won't have to wait 90 days later.
  • With a valid titer test and up-to-date vaccinations, traveling with your pet becomes much easier.
