Don’t Rush to Find a Substitute on Your Own

If the prescribed medication isn’t available, your first thought might be to look for an alternative with a similar name or the same active ingredient.

But having the same active ingredient doesn’t necessarily mean that one medication can safely be substituted for another without consulting a veterinarian. The dosage, formulation, concentration, or treatment schedule may differ.

If your veterinarian prescribed a specific medication and you can’t find it, it’s best to ask them first whether a substitution is appropriate.

Sometimes a Photo Is Enough to Start the Search

You don’t necessarily need to remember the exact name of the medication. You may have a photo of the packaging, part of the name, or the veterinarian’s prescription — any of these can already help with the search.
